Job Description:

Insurance risk surveyor; also known as insurance risk control surveyor, insurance risk analyst or insurance risk advisor; works for general insurance companies, brokers or firms of specialist surveyors.

The main role of a surveyor is to advise about risk, based on technical knowledge and good practice. This involves visiting a wide range of sites, which could be property, aircraft, engineering plant, etc. and then producing reports for the underwriter to decide whether to insure the 'risk'.

Surveyors spend about half of their time visiting clients, usually on their own, and conducting detailed surveys of the sites to be insured. Surveyors often specialize in specific areas, such as:

  • Property
  • Health and safety
  • Fire and perils such as flooding, theft, products and employer liability
Work activities involve:
  • Collating and assessing risk information on site, using templates to record the assessment and collecting  photographic evidence.
  • Looking at risk of flooding to a building.
  • Looking at the processes/activities that take place in the building and perhaps at neighboring properties, in case of any additional risks or hazards.
  • Would examine the risks to the employees, to any customers and visitors to the site.
  • Preparing detailed reports, either onsite, at home or at head office. Reports include recommendations to the underwriter.
  • Advising clients on site and discussing with them opportunities and requirements to improve the level of risk. Persuading clients of the value and need of their risk improvement programmers.
  • Allocating quality grades to the client once improvements have been completed.
  • Accompanying underwriters on site visits to help with their training and development.
  • Liaising with other professionals; e.g. underwriters, brokers, client representatives, or inspectors of health and safety.
  • Keeping up-to-date with processes, legislation, hazardous material technical aspects affecting risks (e.g., trade)
Required Skills:
  • University degree is a must (preferably a degree in civil engineering)
  • Processing internal and external product sample requests
  • General office responsibilities
  • Self motivated, high energy
  • 2 years experience
  • Solid communication skills in Arabic and English (both written and verbal)
  • Owns a car and has a license
